Was not prepared for this level of catharsis. It'll be good fun, I remember Max Payne on ps2. Indeed as the player we are acting more as the instinct side of Max's brain, and i was mainly prepared only for this. I actually almost made a post about playing this game as an alcoholic, it's kind of intense. You're right, he really seems to want to die at many points in the game. It made me look at my own life and examine certain dynamics. As an addict myself this game hit a little close to home. We, as the player, push Max through the ordeal, until he finally reaches the end, where he can find some sort of peace, and perhaps begin on the road to recovery and acceptance. But, as the player, we almost act as his primal, reflex survival instinct, pushing him forward through the most horrendous of circumstances. He cannot see the good in anything he does, or tries to do, in almost every choice he makes for the entire playthrough. Sometimes I feel like Max just wants to be put out of his misery wants it all to be over. Sometimes while playing, I intrerpret the game as a tableau of Max losing his struggle with despression and addiction. I dunno why, but that line always sticks with me, no matter how many times I play through the game. Like one of those nightmares where you keep running and running only to discover you're chasing yourself." He sounds almost scared while delivering the line, like he truly felt that this was where he will die. After clearing yet another room of cops, Max says, "It was starting to feel as if I'd never leave that place. My favourite quote in the game is what I interpret to be another instance of this, and takes place after a gun battle in the police presinct in Chapter 13. The scene cuts to Max, and he hesitates for just a moment, and looks downwards. In Chapter 11, just after Max basically talks Passos into doing his job to try and find Daphne Bernstein, they appraoch a heavily armed tower, the one Max needs to climb in order to cross the canal. There are one or two instances in the game when Max gives the impression that he's scared, or maybe that he just doesn't want to fight anymore.
